I’ve spent large chunks of the last two years writing, editing, and rewriting a concise history of a special mountain. That mountain is Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, and the book I just completed is Half Dome: The History of Yosemite’s Iconic Mountain. It is the story of a mountain born of unique geology, transformed into an ecological island in the sky, and whose steep faces have inspired humans for over 7,000 years.
I worked a seasonal job in Yosemite during this time, which in ways made the writing task more challenging. I believe it is difficult to write well about something that dominates so much of one’s life. For me, my work involved Half Dome, the view from my home included Half Dome, and sometimes my hobby of rock climbing took place on Half Dome. What time remained in the evenings was spent writing a book called Half Dome. This was all too much Half Dome!
Alas, it is an amazing mountain with a rich and unique history. I am left in awe every time I gaze upon its cleft, tear-stained face. This is why I was inspired to write the history of Half Dome.
